Mary Blindflowers Spring Art Exhibition 2019, Naze Tower Gallery
From 1st April to 16th June 2019 Mary Blindflowers’ Art Exhibition will be held at the Naze Tower’s floors, Old Hall Lane, Walton-on-the Naze, Essex CO14 8LE; the painter will show her paintings and drawings tightly tied to her writings.
Naze Tower is a 1720 octagonal brick tower built by Trinity House with an evocative sight to the sea and English countryside.
Trinity House was the organization in charge to build lighthouses and protect shipping routes in Great Britain.
A 1673 map mentions the presence of a tower in the same place where the current one stands, therefore the structure was rebuilt in the 1700s.
This was a former shape of a lighthouse, indeed in the upper part there were some holes where a few lamps for the ships utilizing Harwich harbour used to get hung.
In 1700 it became a tea-house run by the actress Martha Reay. During Napoleonic age it was utilized as a vantage point, used during world war I too. During world war II it became a radar station.
Today, grade II building consists in:

a private museum explaining the history of the tower and headland where it stands;

various art-exhibition halls along with a tea-hall.
The various halls wind along the gradient into a 111 step spiral staircase, as it is a 26 meter high 6 floor tower.
When the tower was built it stood at least a quarter of mile in the hinterland, but over the following centuries the weathering ate the cliffs. Naze Protection Society managed to collect founds and build Crag Walk, a panoramic platform beneath cliffs’ southern edge. The walk is 110 meter long and provides the opportunity to visit the cliffs by screens explaining zone’s geology and natural habitat. Along with giving public access to high and low tide Crag Walk helps protecting the cliffs from the weathering, contributing to preserve the Tower as long as possible in this way.
The name “naze” stems from the ancient English term “naes”, headland, or, simpler, nose. North from the tower there is a nature preserve where it is possible to find fossils and sharks’ teeth. All around it there are special sites of scientific interest: Hamford Waters and Naze Cliffs Arthur Ransome as well speaks about.

Dal 1 aprile al 16 giugno 2019 in una delle sale della Naze Tower, Old Hall Lane, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex CO14 8LE, si svolgerà l’esibizione personale di Mary Blindflowers che esporrà dipinti e disegni legati strettamente ai suoi libri.
Naze Tower è una torre ottagonale in mattoni del 1720 costruita dalla Trinity House, con vista suggestiva sul mare e sulla campagna inglese.
La Trinity House era l’organizzazione incaricata di costruire fari e proteggere le rotte marittime in Gran Bretagna.
Una mappa redatta nel 1673 segnala la presenza di una torre nello stesso punto dove sorge quella attuale, quindi la struttura è stata ricostruita nel Settecento.
Si trattava di una prima forma di faro, infatti nella parte superiore c’erano dei fori davanti ai quali venivano appese delle lampade per le navi che utilizzavano il porto di Harwich.
Nel 1700 diventò una casa da the gestita dall’attrice Martha Reay. Durante l’epoca napoleonica veniva utilizzata come punto di osservazione, usato anche durante la prima guerra mondiale. Durante il secondo conflitto mondiale divenne una stazione radar.

La Naze Protection Society logró recoger recursos para construir Crag Walk, una plataforma panorámica bajo el extremo sur de los acantilados. El paseo mide 110 metros y ofrece la posibilidad de visitar los acantilados mediante paneles que explican la geología y el hábitat natural de la zona. Además de ofrecer publico acceso a la marea alta y baja, el Crag Walk ayuda a proteger los acantilados contra la erosión, contribuiendo asì a preservar la Torre el mayor tiempo posible.
El nombre “Naze” se deriva del término ingles antiguo “naes”, promontorio, o, más simplemente, nariz. Al norte de la torre hay una reserva natural donde se pueden encontrar fósiles y dientes de tiburón. Alrededor hay particulares sitios de interés cientifico.
